Creating Monero Wallets

Creating a wallet in Feather #

Open the Feather Appimage the wizard should automatically start.

On the wizard, select Create new wallet.

On the next page, the wallet seed is shown. You may notice that the seed is shorter than other standard 25 word Monero seed. Feather uses Polyseed for 16 word seeds. To learn more about Polyseed and the benefits compared to 25 word seeds, see the information here.

The seed allows you to recover your funds in case you lose access to your wallet files. Make sure you keep this seed somewhere safe. Do not save it to your computer or send it anywhere online.

Click next after you have verified that you have written down all words in the correct order.

In the Name field, type a name for your wallet. You may name the wallet whatever you want. Feather will automatically fill in a name that hasn’t already been used.

The Directory field shows the default location for the wallet files. We recommend leaving it as the default. If you want to store all files relative to the executable, follow the steps here to enable portable mode.

On the next page, choose a password to encrypt your wallet files with. It is recommended to use a strong password generated with a password manager, such as KeePassXC.

Click on Create/Open wallet to finish wallet creation.

Restoring a wallet from seed #

If the wizard isn’t already open, go to File → New/Restore.

In the wizard, select Restore wallet from seed. Then, select your seed type.

Carefully type the seed into the textbox. Put a single space between each word. Double check that all words are entered in the correct order and spelled correctly.

If you want to extend your seed with a passhrase, click Options and check Extend this with a passphrase. The next page will allow you to enter the passphrase.

On the next page, enter the restore height or wallet creation date. Follow through the rest of the wizard like normal.

The restore height is the blockheight at which a wallet starts scanning for transactions.

It is a mechanism to minimize the time and data required to restore a wallet.

You don’t typically have to worry about the restore height when using Feather. Feather’s seed scheme embeds the wallet creation date, which is used to derive the restore height.

You may need to enter a restore height if you are:

Restoring a wallet from a 24 word seed
Restoring a wallet from a hardware device

In case you don’t know your restore height, you may alternatively enter a wallet creation date when restoring a wallet. The wallet creation date will be used to estimate the appropriate restore height.

If you can’t remember the exact date on which you created the wallet, enter the earliest possible date instead. For example: if you know you created the wallet sometime in 2019, enter 2019-01-01 as the wallet creation date.

If the restore height is set too high, synchronization will skip over some of your earlier transactions leading to an incomplete transaction history and incorrect balance.

The restore height for any existing wallet can be found in Help → Debug info.
